United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC - Free Report) reported weaker-than-expected third-quarter 2026 results, wherein both earnings and revenues missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate. The company reported earnings of 21 cents per ADS, up from 20 cents in the year-ago quarter. The figure missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 8.7%.

Revenues increased 19.6% year over year to $2.32 billion but missed the consensus mark by 1.3%. Higher wafer shipments, improved factory utilization and strong demand for specialty technologies supported growth. Capacity utilization reached 92%, while wafer shipments hit a record high.

UMC's Wafer Shipments Hit Record High

Wafer shipments increased 7.3% sequentially to 1.212 million 12-inch-equivalent wafers, reflecting healthy demand across market segments. Quarterly manufacturing capacity increased to 1.325 million wafers from 1.305 million in the preceding quarter.

Capacity utilization improved to 92% from 85% in the second quarter and 78% in the year-ago period. Several 12-inch fabrication facilities operated at full capacity, while 8-inch operations witnessed a strong recovery. Blended average selling prices remained firm sequentially.

The communication segment contributed 39% of wafer revenues, while consumer applications accounted for 32%. Computer applications represented 13%, and other applications contributed the remaining 16%. The revenue distribution remained unchanged sequentially.

Asia Pacific accounted for 67% of wafer revenues, up from 66% in the preceding quarter. North America contributed 22%, while Europe represented 8% and Japan accounted for 3%. Fabless customers generated 86% of wafer revenues, with integrated device manufacturers contributing 14%.

UMC Benefits From Advanced Technology Demand

Revenues from 22/28-nanometer technologies represented 35% of wafer sales compared with 37% in the preceding quarter. However, the 22-nanometer business reached a record high, accounting for 18.3% of wafer revenues, supported by demand for display drivers, automotive radar and Wi-Fi integrated circuits.

Technologies at 40 nanometers and below contributed 51% of wafer revenues. The 40-nanometer node accounted for 16%, while 65-nanometer technologies represented 19%. Management highlighted continued customer engagement in silicon photonics and advanced packaging, supporting opportunities in artificial intelligence infrastructure.

United Microelectronics' Operating Margins Expand

United Microelectronics Expects Steady Q4 Demand

For the fourth quarter of 2026, management expects wafer shipments to increase by a low-single-digit percentage sequentially. U.S. dollar average selling prices are projected to remain firm, while gross margin should be comparable to the third quarter. Capacity utilization is expected to remain in the low-90% range.

UMC maintained its 2026 cash-based capital expenditure budget at $2 billion. Separately, its board approved an additional capital expenditure budget of approximately $3.2 billion to accelerate expansion in Singapore and Tainan, supporting silicon photonics and advanced packaging.

Management expects positive demand momentum to continue into 2027, with blended average selling prices increasing approximately 10% year over year, supported by improved pricing and a richer product mix. AI-related revenues are expected to approach $300 million in 2026, with AI exposure potentially exceeding one-quarter of total revenues within three years.
